A Holiday Security Tale

T ’was the great holiday shopping event and all through the mall, shoppers hustled and bustled to find a present that was perfect for all.  Lights were strung high as it was a festive affair, as lines of children came to see Santa in his chair. Here and there it was a glorious night as people rushed about unaware of the dangers just out of sight. Although well manned every card scanned was stolen by malware on a Toy Tale’s point of sale. Moms and dads pushed strollers all about while pickpockets grabbed phones, purses and wallets from parents who were too busy to look out. The mall was lined with ATMs of every type with skimmers to take advantage of the holiday hype. And as I sat with my laptop to drink some cocoa, I noticed that several fake public Wi-Fi bars began to glow. From the food court to the cinema across the street scammers were looking for people to cheat. Packages were stuffed and left in the cars with care, never knowing that criminals soon would be there. Smashed windows and a car alarm, revealed that the packages now were all gone.
Little Susie shopped safely at home, as her phone began to ring. “Mrs. King we’ve been trying to reach you,” a surly voice explained, “This is Officer Mane, and I have warrant for an overdue parking ticket you owed. You need to give me your credit card now or your car will be towed.” Susie hung up the phone, for she knew not to give out personal information to people who were unknown. The next day on the TV was a story about people stealing credit cards this way.
Jenny checked her bank, to find that her account was blank. She should have used HTTPS when shopping online for little Jimmy’s fish tank. Oh and poor little Jimmy, he was in fear, because of postings from a school bully this year.
Holiday travelers found hotels here and there. While con-artists were posted fake pizza flyers everywhere. Still more schemers pretended to call from the front desk, where they said the credit card could not be processed through.  Over the phone the credit card numbers flew, as the bandits thought about buying something new.
From coast to coast and country to country criminals are lurking about. Whether at the store, the computer, or the school next door you can find plenty of thieves, hackers, and bullies who just don’t care about other people anymore.
Our tale is not all sad I am happy to say, because there is still good even in this modern day. People who wish to keep you safe and okay with these special security tips today.
Beware of your surroundings when about, because shoulder and stroller surfers who want to steal your valuables may be out.
Don’t leave precious things in a car; less it be broken into with a crowbar.
Use secure sites when you shop online and you will be fine.
Watch your accounts and inspect ATMS where ever you go, so peace of mind you will know.
And if you use public Wi-Fi and think your secrets are safely stored, you might as well be posting them on a Times Square billboard.
