Become a Password Wizard

People are often directed to create strong passwords without actually being told what is considered a strong password. I am here to demystify the process of creating a strong password for you. In order to make a strong password, it helps if I tell you what are some bad password habits.

Bad Habits:

1. Using someone’s name (Ex: harrypotter)

2. Using dictionary words (Ex: wizard)

3. Using only lowercase letters (Ex: hogwarts)

4. Using less than 8 characters (Ex: wand, 12345)

5. Don’t write down your passwords or tell people your password

Now I will provide some advice on creating strong passwords.

Good Habits:

1. Create fake answers for password reset answers that only you will remember.

2. The suggested minimum characters for a password is 8 characters, a truly strong password has around 15 characters.

3. Include numbers, upper/ lowercase letters and symbols.  (Ex: use H@rryP0++3r instead of harrypotter)

4. Instead of passwords use a passphrase (Ex. Ur@Wiz@rdH@rry! = You’re a Wizard Harry!”

5. Consider using a password manager like 1Password or SplashId to store passwords.

I hope these password tips help you work magic when creating a your very own strong password.
